Digging in the Ground

Some people go digging in the ground

Yesterday

Up behind the town

In the barren clay

In the morning sun

In the haze of noon

Into the deep twilight

Sing a little tune

Digging in the ground

Digging in the ground

Between the great sea swell

And the tumbling sparrow

Digging in the ground

Digging in the ground

Towards the great fireball

And the secret marrow

Digging in the ground

Digging in the ground

Digging in the ground

Some people go digging in the ground

Digging a hole

To divide the body from the soul

Beneath the broad blue sky

Ceaseless toil for a vein of gold,

A river of oil

Digging in the ground

Digging in the ground

In the dying light all alone

We go digging in the ground

Digging for shards and bones

For things better left alone
